Cats love to sit on top of things, no matter how little height the objects actually give them. They just like the feeling of feeling elevated, even an inch. Case in point: Phoebe lowered her butt on top of my rectangular-shaped hard drive. It's just big enough for her fuzzy bottom and you better believe she made it happen. Now she's the boss of me ... as if she wasn't already.
