Know the Signs of Feline Diabetes #PetHealthAwareness

Catladyland is usually a place for laughter, but today it's important to cover a subject that's definitely no laughing matter.

November is Feline Diabetes Awareness Month, and I can honestly say, before writing this, I didn't know much about the very treatable, manageable disease that often affects older, overweight cats. Like in human diabetes, feline diabetes happens when there's not enough insulin in the body to balance out the glucose in the diet.

Source

It's important to know the symptoms of feline diabetes, and consult with your veterinarian if you're seeing those signs. The main signals from your cat will be increased thirst and more frequent urination. Some cats also display increased appetite, weight loss, listlessness sometimes even vomiting or diarrhea. Your veterinarian will run some tests to determine the cause of the symptoms.

Source

Although feline diabetes sounds scary, it can actually be reversed with dietary changes -- not all cats will need to receive insulin injections to regulate glucose levels. It's important for a diabetic cat (as well as all cats) to receive a high-protein, low-carbohydrate diet. You absolutely can't free-feed a cat with feline diabetes.

Knowing the signs of feline diabetes, immediately consulting with your veterinarian and making dietary changes could mean a lifetime of remission, and more precious years with your happy, healthy cat!

Should You Adopt Two Cats Instead of One? #AdoptaShelterPet

We've almost always shared our home with at least two cats, and it's worked out pretty well for us. After Fritz crossed the Rainbow Bridge, we adopted Cosmo as a companion for Saffy. A few years later we adopted Phoebe to round out the trio. Cosmo gets along swimmingly with both of the girls, but Saffy and Phoebe don't hang together very often. Whatever the case, someone always has someone else with which to socialize, play and nap.

Saffy, Phoebe and Cosmo

I believe there are definite benefits to adopting two cats instead of one, if your situation is well-suited for more than one kitty. Here are some things to think about when considering bringing two cats into your home:

1. Companionship

Two cats usually entertain each other, providing social and mental interaction, exercise and additional grooming. Cats don't crave packs like dogs do, but they do tend to live in colonies in the wild, so the multi-cat household can be an easy and comfortable environment for two cats.

2. Space

Do you have enough space for multiple cats? Although cats can enjoy interaction, they also need space to be alone, hide and find height. Even a small home can be "catified" to create extra space with cat towers, shelves and other above-ground spaces for cats to inhabit. If you're looking for ideas, be sure to grab a copy of Jackson Galaxy and Kate Benjamin's new book, Catification -- it just came out this week, and includes some fun and practical solutions.

Also remember that you'll need space for as many litter boxes as you have cats, plus one.

Saffy and Cosmo

3. Cats or kittens?

Adopting kittens from the same litter can be a benefit because they've already been socialized together. A kitten and an experienced cat can be a great choice as well -- that's what we've done in the past. It's important to make sure the adult cat with a history of living alone. When adopting an older cat, always access the history, if possible. Some cats specifically don't like children or other animals -- we need to respect those pieces of information. Sometimes adult cats were surrendered together, are close buddies, and it's a good idea to keep them together, if possible -- or at least not split them apart.

Cosmo and Phoebe share the vent (sort of)

4. Time and finances

In my experience, it's been a positive experience to have more than one cat, but there are definitely a few considerations regarding time and finances. Do you have the time to correctly socialize the new cat/s with any existing pets? This is critical and sets the tone for life with the new feline family members/s.

Multiple cats means multiple vet bills, jugs of litter and food. Truly examine those needs against your budget before making the adoption decision.

Do you share your home with multiple cats? Did you adopt more than one cat at the same time? What's been your experience?

You Need to Make this Easy, No-Sew Cat Bed! #BlogPawsDIY

Like most cats, mine are skilled in the art of couch potato-ing. They're masters at identifying potentially comfortable surfaces on which to lie ... and somehow even find coziness in places that don't seem quite cozy to me. But try to explain cats ... go ahead. Yeah, I thought so. Impossible.

I wouldn't consider myself a super-crafty person, but I can create simple projects, and even sew a little. I found instructions for a simple, no-sew cat bed that takes about half an hour to create -- longer if you're actively shooing cats off the top of the fleece.

Here's what you'll need:

  • 2 pieces of fleece (different designs are nice) that are exactly the same size. There's no prescribed size -- I usually use 1/2 of a yard or less.
  • Sharp scissors
  • Masking tape
  • Ruler or measuring tape
  • Pillow stuffing

1. Lay the fleece pieces on top of each other, with the "good" sides on the outside.

2. Place a line of tape, 4-inches from the bottom of each side. This will leave a square in each corner -- follow the line of tape and cut out the square.

3. Cut 1-inch strips from the fabric to the line of tape -- this will create a fringe all the way around the fleece.

4. Prevent cat from playing with fringe (good luck).

5. Knot the fringed pieces of the top fabric to those of the bottom fabric.

6. Move cat so you can tie all the knots (good luck).

7. After three sides are tied, stuff bed with desired amount of pillow stuffing, and then tie final side.

Please note: Cat may immediately begin testing the new bed by "making biscuits."

Yes, it's a success!

Good luck with making your no-sew cat bed! Even more luck trying to work around your furry "assistants!"

Help Your Cats Find Their #PerfectWeight AND Win Prizes!

What we choose to feed our cats is a personal preference. We all want the best for our fuzz-butts and make cat-food decisions based on many factors, including budget, research, convenience or special needs. Catladyland is not here to tell you what or how to feed your cats; however, from time to time, we're happy to present options we feel good about, knowing you will make the best decision for you and your cat.

Let's talk about weight loss. It can be hard, right?  I know because I've been there, and I had to make conscious food choices and get my body moving in order to shed those pounds. Turns out those everyday mocha lattes don't burn calories. And in other news of the unfair ...

But seriously, obesity is a real problem among both people and pets. According to the Association for Pet Obesity Prevention, more than 50% of pets in the U.S. are overweight. In fact, a few years ago we took our Saffy to the vet and she'd gained three pounds, which -- compared to humans -- is nearly 30 pounds! Crazy!

Saffy was around ten years old at that time, and had grown less active with age. Plus, she's always been a food-jacker. She cleans her plate and then stands behind the other two cats, hoping to intimidate them, thus snagging the few bites that may be left on the dish. She's kind of like a cafeteria bully.

We knew we had to monitor her food intake more closely and make a conscious effort to engage her in activity. No more mocha lattes for Saffy. I kid, but we did take the the cat weight loss journey very seriously. Oh, and treats? We realized we were handing them out several times a day, calling them "snacks." Those snacks really stacked up the calories at the end of the day.

And if you're someone who gives their table scraps as a "treat," please know that what feels like a treat to us, could be the equivalent of a complete meal for a cat. Take a look at this Treat Translator tool for more scoop on the subject. Oh, and if you're interested in learning about how human weight in pounds compares to cat weight, you'll find this tool really helpful.

Perhaps you share your life with an overweight cat and are looking for for guidance during your cat's weight loss journey. Well, Hill's® Science Diet® is ready to partner with you. Their breakthrough new blend, Hill's® Science Diet® Adult Perfect Weight is formulated with natural ingredients and actually helps cats burn calories. I'm not kidding! More than 70% of dogs and cats lost weight within ten weeks of eating the food.

And guess what? Hill's® Science Diet® and Catladyland are teaming up to help you along during the weight loss process. And unlike many weight loss journeys, it's fun! We invite you to join the 10-Week Turnaround Sweepstakes -- and it's simple. You commit to feeding your cat Hill's® Science Diet® Adult Perfect Weight cat food for ten weeks and share their success along the way. And by participating in the program, you'll be eligible for bi-weekly sweepstakes, as well as a grand prize of FREE Perfect Weight food for a whole year! Win-win, right? So go ahead, join!

Now I'm waiting for Hills to come out with a calorie-burning mocha latte. C'mon guys!

Connecting at BlogPaws: We Truly "Get" One Another

As some of you know, I recently returned from BlogPaws, the most fabulous pet-blogging conference on the planet. It was my fifth year in attendance, and once again did not disappoint!

View from my room at the Westin Lake Las Vegas -- nice!

My favorite part of BlogPaws is networking and connecting with friends and brands. It's always great to see my buddies from Hill's, PetSafe and Purina. Plus, I got to meet the Weruva folks! This was exciting because I'm currently working on a campaign for them. And Hauspanther's Cat Style Lounge was the best yet!

And speaking of friends, they were everywhere! I can't tell you how absolutely gratifying and fun it is to share the same space with other pet lovers who truly "get" one another.

JaneA from Paws and Effect, Christine from Riverfront Cats, me, and Vicky from Catster

It's like coming home. I mean, it's cool enough to interact online with other bloggers, but to sit face-to-face with them, and truly connect is something else altogether.

A new friend from Kitty Bungalow

And congrats to Debbie Glovatsky of Glogirly and Alana Grelyak from Cat in the Fridge for winning well-deserved awards in the Nose-to-Nose Social Media and Blogging Awards! I couldn't be prouder to run in the same circles with these talented ladies!

All in all, it was another fabulous conference! Next year I hope to see you in Nashville for the 2015 conference! Register now!

The Cats Are Flighting Over It, So It Must Be Good

Yesterday  I returned from the BlogPaws conference, and, as always, came home with a suitcase full of booty for my cats. This year's favorite was the Peach Industries Kitty Lounger I won in the Hauspanter Cat Style Lounge. The cats are fighting over it, so it must be good. And it's PURPLE! Wooo!

My Cat is Always in My Face

Cosmo loves to watch me work. What am I talking about -- he loves to watch me do anything. Even when he's not physically in my face, he's there in the virtual sense. On some occasions, he's in both places at once. Spoooooky.

As you know, I'm at the fabulous BlogPaws conference this weekend. I've had the pleasure of hanging out with dogs, cats and ferrets -- and, although I keep missing her, there's also a capybara wandering about (not on her own, of course. Wild capybara loose at the Westin Lake Las Vegas!).

My friend Amy Jo creates ferret clothing for her company Enlightened Ferret Fashions. Where else, but BlogPaws, can you see a ferret walking around in a wedding dress? LOVE!

I mean, come on! How cute is she??

My Cat Hijacked My TweetDeck and I Was NOT Looking at Half-Nekkid People

Last week when I was participating in the #BlogPawsChat, Phoebe decided to hijack my TweetDeck, and then look at me like I was disturbing her. It's always my fault.

P.S. That half-nekkid woman in my feed is some kind of sponsored weight-loss post on Twitter. I'm not looking at half-nekkid people when I should be chatting with BlogPaws people.

#WeruvaPets : Cat Food Just Like Mom Would Make

I'm a visual person, and the look of a dish is really important to me. I think that's true for many of us -- when we see an appetizing-looking plate of food, our mouths immediately begin watering, right? Especially comfort food. My mom makes the best chicken casserole, and just the thought of the creamy gravy and tasty bites of chicken send me into a food-frenzy. And there are never enough leftovers! OK, let me stop talking about my food, and move on to what this post is about: cat food! But really, the two subjects have more in common than you might think.

Weruva's Paw Lickin' Chicken

When I opened up the first can of Weruva food for my cats, my first thought was "homemade comfort food." I could look on the plate and see what was in the meal. Some of the chicken dishes even smelled like Mom's casserole. Mom, if you're reading this, that's a compliment.

Weruva canned food is grain-, GMO-, MSG- and carrageenan-free. Additionally, the chicken formulas are free of fish and the fish formulas are free of chicken. The meat cuts are lean and hand-placed into cans. Really, when you look at the chicken, it won't be hard to believe it comes from cage-free boneless, skinless, white-meat breasts (perfect for obligate carnivores). In fact, Weruva cat food is produced in a human-food facility, using many of the ingredients and processes that are used for human foods.

I guess it makes sense Phoebe, Cosmo and Saffy would go nuts for Weruva -- they're constantly interested in what's on my plate! And Weruva's lines are 80% moisture, but don't think that'll stop your cats from tipping over your water cup. Cats are made of awesome ... and curiosity.

Cosmo inhales most anything, but Phoebe is a picky eater. I was a little blown away to see how quickly she gobbled the Weruva. Although my cats enjoyed the sustainable fish flavors, they were particularly partial to the chicken-based ones. I think they must have stolen a few tastes of my mom's casserole and the cat food reminded them of it. They know what's good. I didn't taste-test any of the food, but don't think I didn't consider it. You don't believe me, do you?

Look how they Cosmo and Phoebe went to town on the Funky Chunky Chicken Soup!

I know this has nothing to do with the taste of the food (still think I tasted it, huh?), but the names of the flavors sound good enough to eat. I've definitely eaten my own words, and I'd probably eat these as well. Close your eyes and think of these flavors. Wait, open your eyes, read these flavors, then close your eyes and think about them. If I were there with you right now, I'd read them to you, but alas, you are not so lucky (and nor am I).

OK, now for some of the flavors: Grandma's Chicken Soup, Outback Grill, Asian Fusion, Polynesian BBQ, Mideast Feast. OK, now close your eyes and think. Hungry? I thought so. And your cat is probably hungry too, so stop reading for a moment and grab a treat for both you and kitty. Yes, Weruva makes treats too.

Back? Good. You're just in time to click over and follow Weruva on Facebook and Twitter!

My Cat is Jealous of BlogPaws, and I Don't Blame Him

Cosmo always knows when something's up. Seriously -- he can tell when I'm gearing up to head out of town. I leave for BlogPaws a week from Wednesday and I swear he can already sense my impending departure. I mean, look at that face.

And once the suitcase comes out, I'll be getting the serious stink-eye. Also, he'll try and stow away by climbing into my bag ... at least twice.

I can't say I blame him, though -- BlogPaws is the place to be for all things pet-blogger. Plus, he's seen my photos and knows other cats will be in attendance, so I'm sure there's some jealousy at play. Deep down inside he knows he wouldn't go anyway -- he barely tolerates the 10-minute car ride to the vet!

But hey, listen to this: The preliminary conference agenda is newly updated, and includes fabulous speakers and sessions. Here are some of the ones I don't want to miss:
  • Be an Instagram Star (BTW, follow me on Instagram! One step closer to stardom!)
  • SEO Advances Session/Workshop
  • Top Legal Issues Every Blogger Faces
  • Monetizing Ideas for Profit
And more!

Click image for a closer look!

There's something for everyone. What I really appreciate is the variety of sessions, including some designed especially for beginner or advanced bloggers. So even if you don't even have a blog, but are thinking of starting one, you'll walk away with a boatload of tips, inspiration and contacts to come back home and get going on creating a successful blog!

And there are some cool things happening in conjunction with the Nose-to-Nose awards, including the presentation of a canine police vest to the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department. BlogPaws will also donate oxygen pet-masks to the Henderson EMS. Nice!

I love meeting new friends at BlogPaws!

There's still time to register for the Lake Las Vegas BlogPaws conference, but act fast -- last year the conference sold out, and you don't want to miss your chance to experience the 2014 extravaganza!

You can snag 10% off by using the registration code BlogPaws2014-Angie-10.

I'm Getting Personal About BlogPaws

I love this photo of Phoebe and Cosmo. It looks to me like they're waiting in line for something.

OK, here comes the segue ... get ready for it ...

Guess what? You don't have to wait in line to register for the BlogPaws conference. No way. It's easy-peasy, and you'll be set to go in no time.

I know I've been writing and posting about BlogPaws for some time now. And I know you know I'm an ambassador. I don't want to spend this post telling you facts about the conference that you can easily snap up when you go to their site, so I'm going to get personal here. I'm going to tell some of my special reasons I love attending the BlogPaws conference.

#1: The social shuttle

When I'm on the shuttle from the airport to the hotel (and there is a FREE shuttle in Vegas this year), I usually make new friends who are also heading to the conference. This was especially cool when I attended my very first one in 2010 -- I didn't feel like I was such a loner when I walked into the hotel. You can usually tell who the conference goers are -- it's like we recognize each other. In my experience, people who are devoted to their pets are usually kind-hearted and friendly. Say hi.

Here I am with Tamar from I Have Cat and Deb from Glogirly, two of the kindest around!

#2 Desserts!

The desserts are crazy-good. I have a serious sweet tooth, so it's a treat for me to go town on a variety of noms after lunch and dinner. And there are sometimes choices. Is that weird that the desserts are one of the reasons I look forward to the conference? I couldn't care less -- I told you I was going to get personal. And in a few short weeks I'm going to get up close and personal with something chocolate. Or maybe cheesecake. I hope cheesecake.

Whaaaaat????

#3: Well-dressed cats

I get to see cats in clothing. My cats have no patience for clothes, and I know people have definite opinions about whether or not our feline friends should get dolled up, but I think it depends on the cat. At BlogPaws, there are some seriously cute cats who are friendly, well-socialized, comfortable and look faaaabuuuloouusss!!!

Cats in clothes! Yay!

#4: Hanging with cool cats

The Cat Lounge! My friend Kate Benjamin of Hauspanther puts together this amazing room of the latest, greatest cat products on the market. There are fountain, scratchers, litter boxes, toys ... and that's just the beginning. The Cat Lounge tends to be the "home base" for cat bloggers. It's where we can go during down time, to visit with our friends, and check out the display items. Sometimes there are even little freebies. Oh, and guess what? In the Cat Lounge, you can register to win one of those cool display items! The drawing is the last day of the conference, and believe me, you want to register.

The awesome Cat Lounge!

So that's all for now -- more reasons for you to attend! Please feel free to ask me any questions you may have about the conference, and you can always learn more by attending the #BlogPawsChat on Twitter tonight from 8-10 PM CDT. Speaking of attending, when you register, you can still receive 10% off when you use the code: BlogPaws2014-Angie-10. You're welcome, and I hope to see you on the airport shuttle!

Phoebe Does Not Approve of Government Paperwork, But Does Endorse BlogPaws

So last week I had to complete some state revenue paperwork in order to sell my book, whiskerslist: the kitty classifieds, at a local pet expo. In general, I'm not a fan of filling out paperwork -- really, who is? If there's a person out there who totally gets their jollies by populating fields with information, especially when it's government-related, please come forward. Perhaps I can magically absorb some of your mystical mojo.

Phoebe sided with me with regard to the government paperwork, and promptly populated the fields with her fuzzy butt.

Guess what's not hard to do and way more fun than the government? Registering for the BlogPaws conference! Seriously, folks -- whether you're an experienced pet blogger, a beginner, or even considering first-time diving into the blogosphere, this is the place to be.

BlogPaws 2013: Here I am with Stephanie and the one and only Snotface Ferret. Good times!

There are cool speakers, lots of friendly people (and some pets!), awards and really great food. Don't even get me started on the cheesecake. Here are some things you can do to get involved in BlogPaws even before the conference, as well as make plans for the May conference in Vegas.

1. Join the BlogPaws community. This is a fantastic way to meet fellow pet bloggers, ask questions, find out about current events and learn all kinds of interesting tidbits.

2. Attend a Tuesday night (except for third Tuesday) Twitter #BlogPawsChat, from 8-10:00 PM, EST.

3. Register for the conference! You'll even get a 10% discount when you use the code: BlogPaws2014-Angie-10. You want to act fast -- last year the conference completely sold out.

I'm an official BlogPaws Ambassador, so feel free to ask me any questions -- I'm happy to help! I promise all of this is way easier and a ton more exciting than filling out government paperwork. And it's Phoebe-approved!

Phoebe enjoyed the swag AND the bag I brought back from BlogPaws!

Some Cool News and a Photo of Saffy with a Plastic Lid on Her Head

It's the weekend! Woo Hoo!!! We wanted to take this opportunity to share a few bits of news with you. For starters, Catladyland's Facebook page hit 300,000 this week! That's almost a third of a million! Holy cats, that's cool! Thanks to all of you for contributing to the fun we have every day on the good ol' Facebook.

Did you hear that Texts from Mittens has its own Twitter account now? That's right -- our pal Mitty finally took the leap to Twitterville and is currently hounding Judge Judy for a follow. Paws crossed he'll get his wish. In addition to Tweeting the new and flashback text message images, he's also personally Tweeting. Yes, this is your opportunity to chat with Mittens himself! Please note that nothing will change as far as Facebook goes -- you'll still see Mittens there every day. This is just an "in addition to." Ohhh ... also keep your eyes and ears peeled for Mittens merchandise. We polled you on the Facebook page last week, and there's definitely a desire!

Click here to access Mittens' Twitter page!

The price of my book, whiskerslist: the kitty classifieds, has been reduced this week on Amazon. It looks like they have a limited number left in stock before they will order more from the publisher. If you've been thinking about snagging a copy, now's the time to do it! And thank you to everyone who already has a copy and is enjoying it -- I love the comments and messages you've been sending me! Don't forget you -- um, your cat -- can create ads on the whiskerslist site, as well as comment on existing ads. How fun is that?

Click here to access the whiskerlist site.

The BlogPaws conference is quickly approaching. This one will mark my fifth year in attendance! I'll tell you, it's well-worth the trip to connect with like-minded pet lovers, learn a ton about starting a blog -- or making your existing one even better, and have an absolute TON of fun! And since I'm an Ambassador, feel free to ask me any questions you might have about the conference -- I'm happy to help!

And guess what? One of the cool things I get to do as an Ambassador is offer you a discount on the already deal of a registration fee. Here's how it works: When you check out, use the special code BlogPaws2014-Angie-10 and you'll receive 10% off the already-deal-of-a registration fee!

And lastly, as promised, here is a photo of Saffy with a plastic red lid -- I mean hat --  on her head. Stacy and Glenn, this is especially for you, although I hope everyone enjoys the glory of The Lady in Red.

A Christmas Miracle Happened at My House!

Yesterday all three cats were within mere inches of one another! There's something about trees -- especially ones with dangling objects hanging from them -- that brings cats together.  It's a Christmas miracle! Truly a wonder to behold!

Speaking of adorable or funny holiday pet photos, there's still time to enter BlogPaw's December pet photo contest! Prizes will be awarded to three winners. Each prize is valued at $25 and is compliments of our friends at Pet360. Click here to see the gallery and information about entering!

How You Can Help Animals Affected by Colorado Floods

By now you've heard about the devastation left behind in the tragic Colorado floods. We are proud to be a part of the BlogPaws Disaster Response Network, a group of bloggers who help get the word out about ways to help animals in areas affected by disasters. The headquarters of BlogPaws is located in Frederick, CO and, although some of the area has sustained much damage, they've managed to remain safe and dry.

On Monday, 21 helicopters were used for evacuations, and so far, 11,750 have been evacuated. The flood continues to spread across 200 miles, affecting 15 counties. Currently 36 shelters have opened their doors to displaced people and animals.

In addition to the local rescue efforts, other pet-related companies have extended their aid.

  • Today, Freekibble is donating 100% of Halo kibble raised to benefit those affected by the floods. Please take the time to visit the site -- this is a free and easy way for you to help.
  • Hill's Pet Nutrition is working to enact their Disaster Relief Network, which will provide much-needed dog and cat food to the area.

BlogPaws has linked several organizations that are offering relief efforts to which you can donate ... or at least share their information. And you can always click the "Helping Pets in the Colorado Flooding" badge located at the top of this blog.

When disaster strikes, it's more important than ever to come together as a community. Please join Catladyland and BlogPaws in making a difference for those affected by the devastating floods.

How You Can Help Animals Impacted By The Oklahoma Tornado

Sometimes it's hard to smile when we know there are sad things happening around us; however, we can reach out and make an impact. As part of the Blogger Disaster Response Network, I'm here to share some information with you.

We've all been touched by the heartbreaking images of the Oklahoma tornado aftermath. Right now the biggest way we can help the animal impacted by the devastation is with cash donations.
